New Phase of the ePA: Key Features for Insured Individuals

With the latest update, insured individuals now have access to new features, including a digitally supported medication plan and push notifications directly within the ePA app.

„This new phase of development for the electronic patient record is an important step toward embedding it even more firmly in the daily lives of insured individuals.“

Andreas Strausfeld, Chairman of the BITMARCK Executive Board

Insured individuals can now take advantage of two key new features of their electronic patient record (ePA). First, the digitally supported medication plan is available in the insured individuals’ front end. Second, insured individuals can now receive push notifications on their smartphones regarding activities in their ePA. BITMARCK and RISE have made the ePA, in its current version 3.1.3, available on schedule to 80 percent of statutory health insurance providers. The update with the new features is now available in app stores.

Andreas Strausfeld, Chairman of the BITMARCK Executive Board: “This new phase of development for the electronic patient record is an important step toward embedding it even more firmly in the daily lives of insured individuals. The digitally supported medication plan is a tangible benefit for people who take multiple medications, and push notifications also make the ePA a part of everyday life—just as we’re used to with banking apps, for example. However, for the ePA to continue its success, policymakers must take action. In particular, the ability to use artificial intelligence in the ePA must be promoted.”

Dr. Christian Schanes, member of the management board at RISE: “By releasing version 3.1.3 on schedule, we are consistently continuing the ongoing development of the ePA. The new features not only represent a functional expansion but also demonstrate that the ePA is designed to be flexible and scalable to meet future requirements. A modern architecture, standardized interfaces, and continuous releases make it possible to efficiently deliver new value to insured individuals and bring innovations to healthcare more quickly.”

Medication Plan Reduces Risks

With the digitally supported medication plan, insured individuals now have a complete overview of their medications: prescription drugs are listed, and over-the-counter medications can be added by the insured. In addition, dosage instructions can be linked to the medications, which can help reduce risks associated with taking them.

Push Notifications for Greater Transparency

Push notifications are a new feature that promotes transparency in care and actively involves insured individuals — the medical record sends a notification to a smartphone when new documents are uploaded or the record is accessed.

Full-text search is coming at the end of 2026

Another important feature of ePA 3.1.3 will be introduced at the end of the year: full-text search. All documents stored in the ePA can then be easily searched using keywords. This makes it easier for healthcare providers in particular to work with the data in the medical record and is another step toward integrating the ePA more closely into medical care.
